What is Asterix?
Asterix is a comic series developed by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo; its first page appeared in the first issue of the weekly Pilote on 29 October 1959. The official site counts 40 comic albums and five illustrated albums, translated into more than 110 languages and dialects.
Who holds the rights?
The official site’s notice names Les Éditions Albert René and Goscinny–Uderzo, and marks Asterix, Obelix and Idefix as registered trademarks. In March 2011 Hachette Livre announced it had bought the remaining 40% of Éditions Albert René, giving it full control of the company and its related rights, including book, film and merchandising rights.
What should buyers check?
Say whether the artwork comes from the comic albums, the animated or live-action films, or Alain Chabat’s animated series for Netflix, and check that the approval covers that source. If the packaging shows character names, use the names from the approved edition for each language, and print the copyright and trademark notice the licensor approved.
