Who licenses Harry Potter products?
Merchandise based on the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films and the new HBO series is licensed through Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP), which runs toy, fashion, home décor and publishing programmes with licensees worldwide. The novels are by J.K. Rowling; licensing for products based on the films and the series runs through WBDGCP.
What changes for toys in 2027?
On 10 February 2026 Hasbro and WBDGCP announced a multi-year partnership that makes Hasbro the global primary toy licensee for Harry Potter from 2027, covering the films and the HBO Original series that debuts in 2027. Dolls, role play, action figures, collectibles, interactive plush and board games were named. For a toy project, ask which licensee the product is made under and when that licence ends; an approval under one licensee does not carry over to another.
What should buyers prepare?
Name the product type (toy, bag, stationery, apparel), the artwork source (the Harry Potter films, Fantastic Beasts or the HBO series), the destination countries and the sales channels. Ask the supplier for the licensee’s name and the approval for this product, not only a brand letter.
