What is Transformers?
Hasbro says Transformers made its worldwide debut in 1984 with robot-to-vehicle action figures, supported by a comic book series and the animated series The Transformers. Hasbro lists Transformers among the brands it owns and controls.
Who licenses Transformers products?
Hasbro runs Transformers toys itself and also licenses the brand to other companies: its annual report says it licenses its IP for apparel, publishing, home goods and electronics, and in some cases for toys. Its 2024 40th-anniversary release says Hasbro built the brand with multiple partner licensees. For a project, ask which licensee the product is made under and which categories and countries the licence covers.
What should buyers check?
Say which version the artwork comes from: classic 1980s designs, a film or a newer series. Film products can involve studio rights as well: Takara Tomy’s Japanese Transformers site carries Paramount Pictures copyright lines on film items and states that the Japanese and English Transformers names are Takara Tomy registered trademarks in Japan. For Japan, confirm which company’s approval your product needs.
