What is Star Wars?
Star Wars is Lucasfilm’s saga. Lucasfilm, incorporated by George Lucas in 1971, released Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977 and was sold to The Walt Disney Company in 2012; the saga has continued in films and Disney+ series such as Ahsoka, which premiered in 2023.
Who makes Star Wars toys?
Lucasfilm’s timeline says the 1978 Star Wars campaign, from Kenner action figures to novels and comics, helped redefine film licensing, and that Lucasfilm and Kenner (now owned by Hasbro) revived the toy licence in 1995 after a 10-year pause. In their 2025 annual reports, Hasbro says it holds licences with Disney for Star Wars toys and games, and Mattel lists Star Wars among the properties it licenses from Disney Consumer Products.
What should buyers check?
Star Wars has more than one toy licensee, so ask which company the product is made under and whether that licence covers your category. Name the film or series behind the artwork and every character shown, and ask for the approval of this exact product, not only a brand letter.
