Who created the Moomins?
The Moomins were created by the Finnish artist Tove Jansson. The first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, was published in Swedish by Söderström & Co in 1945; in 1954 London’s The Evening News began running the Moomin comic strip, and the first Moomin products reached the market the same year.
Who licenses Moomin products?
Moomin Characters Oy Ltd is the official body that supervises Moomin copyright. Its agent Rights & Brands is the main partner for global licensing, and the licensing page lists Rights & Brands Asia for mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore; the brand has more than 800 licensees worldwide.
What should buyers check?
Licensees must send product descriptions to the licensor for approval before production begins, so ask the supplier for the licensee’s name and the approval for your exact item. Say whether the design uses book illustrations or comic-strip artwork, and list every character it shows.
