Who is Hatsune Miku?
Hatsune Miku is the character of a virtual singer software developed by Crypton Future Media; Crypton’s official character page gives the first software release date as 31 August 2007. Anyone can type in lyrics and a melody to make the software sing, and the character has since grown into concerts, exhibitions, CDs and goods.
Who licenses Hatsune Miku products?
Crypton Future Media. Fans may use the official character illustrations only for non-commercial work, under Creative Commons BY-NC and Crypton’s own Piapro Character License; any commercial use needs separate permission from Crypton. Crypton says it grants commercial rights through individual licences, which has led to contracts with many companies and expansion overseas.
What should buyers check?
Fan art shared under the non-commercial licences cannot simply be put on goods for sale. Crypton says it uses creators’ artwork in commercial projects where it can, so ask who drew the design and whether Crypton approved that artwork for this product. A design that also shows Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO or KAITO needs each character covered.
