Pixar’s official timeline says that in 1986 Steve Jobs bought the computer division from George Lucas and set it up as an independent company called Pixar. In 1995 it released Toy Story, which Pixar calls the world’s first computer-animated feature film, and in 2006 The Walt Disney Company announced it had agreed to buy the studio.
Who licenses Pixar products?
Pixar Animation Studios is one of The Walt Disney Studios’ studios, and since 4 October 2026 Disney Consumer Products’ global licensing and publishing businesses have sat under Disney Entertainment – Studios. Mattel’s annual report for 2025 lists Disney Pixar properties, including Cars and Toy Story, among the licences it holds from Disney Consumer Products, and plans new products for the 20th anniversary of Cars in 2026.
What should buyers check?
Pixar is a studio, not a single brand: name the film (for example Toy Story or Cars), the characters and whether the artwork comes from a new release or an earlier film. Ask which company’s licence covers your product type and destination markets, and get the approval for this exact design.
