Who is Spider-Man?
Spider-Man is Peter Parker, introduced in Amazing Fantasy No. 15 in 1962. Disney’s D23 credits the character to the collaboration between Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, describes Peter as a bookish high-school student, and says the costume, web-shooters and red-and-blue colour scheme came from Ditko.
Who licenses Spider-Man products, and who makes the films?
Disney’s annual report for fiscal 2025 lists Spider-Man among the major properties it licenses for third-party products. Film rights are separate: the same report says Sony Pictures Entertainment has the rights to produce and distribute Spider-Man films, licensed from Marvel before Disney acquired it, and D23’s entry on Spider-Man: Homecoming says Sony has franchise rights while Marvel owns merchandising rights.
What should buyers check?
Say exactly where the artwork comes from: comics, a specific film, an animated series or a game. Do not assume an approval for one source covers another, and if a film design shows an actor’s likeness, ask whether the approval covers it. Ask the supplier for the licensee’s name and the approval for this design.
