What does Mattel own?

Mattel, founded in 1945, describes itself as a play and family entertainment company. Its franchise brands include Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, American Girl, Thomas & Friends, UNO, Masters of the Universe, Matchbox, Monster High and Polly Pocket.

Brand owner, licensor and licensee

Mattel makes toys under its own brands, licenses those brands to other companies for consumer products and also takes licences from entertainment companies. On 15 September 2026 Mattel and BBC Studios announced a multi-year global licensing partnership bringing Bluey to Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, Polly Pocket and UNO products from autumn 2026. A product with a Mattel brand on it may be made by Mattel, by a licensee, or combine a second property.

What should buyers check?

Ask whether the product is made by Mattel or under a Mattel licence. For licensed products, ask for the licensee’s name, the brands and categories covered and the sales territories. Co-branded items such as Bluey × Barbie involve two rights holders, and both licences have to match the product.
