What is The Lord of the Rings, and who holds the rights?
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Saul Zaentz company acquired rights to both books from United Artists in 1976; today Middle-earth Enterprises owns exclusive worldwide motion picture, merchandising, stage and other rights, and Embracer Group acquired it in October 2022. Embracer notes that Zaentz licensed New Line Cinema in 1998 for Peter Jackson’s live-action trilogies.
How does licensing work?
Middle-earth Enterprises’ licensing page splits enquiries by use: merchandising, stage rights and services based on the books go to Middle-earth Enterprises; screenings, clips and stills from the films directed by Peter Jackson or Kenji Kamiyama go to Warner Bros.; printed matter goes to HarperCollins. Merchandise applicants need at least three years of manufacturing and distribution in the product line, and a reply can take up to eight weeks.
What should buyers check?
Find out whether the artwork comes from the books, Peter Jackson’s films, Kenji Kamiyama’s film or Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated film, because the licensing page treats them separately and sends Jackson and Kamiyama film requests to Warner Bros. If the design uses film imagery or stills, ask the supplier for an approval that covers that imagery, not only a book-based merchandise licence.
